Miranda Skoczek · Constructed Reality

by Lucy Feagins, Editor

There are a handful of artists who you might have noticed we cover time and time again, creatives we are constantly drawn to, and whose work just seems to just get even more AMAZING as each year goes by. Miranda Skoczek is one such artist. Yes, she’s one of our personal favourites.  Miranda is a true creative, who lives and breathes her passion, and whose love of colour and visual storytelling knows no bounds.  Her latest exhibition, Constructed Reality opens in Brisbane today.

Melbourne artist Miranda Skoczek throws herself into the all consuming swirl of research, inspiration and experimentation for each new show.  She scours libraries, the internet and eBay for shapes, historical objects and sculptures, fragments of pattern, colour and mystical iconography which later find themselves woven into her richly layered canvases. Her latest exhibition, Constructed Reality, takes inspiration from ancient history and mythology, as well as more contemporary notions of the importance of ‘home’.

I wanted this body of work to reflect the importance I place on ‘home’ and how significant it is in determining a sense of self’ explains Miranda.  ‘These pictures speak of the human desire to embellish and decorate one’s surroundings. I am on a constant quest of searching for, collecting and editing, and manufacturing my own reality. I want to immerse the viewer in a space where the familiar collides with sheer fantasy’

Constructed Reality opens at Edwina Corlette Gallery in Brisbane today. We have always loved Miranda’s vibrant and engaging work, but I have to say, this body of work REALLY has us swooning!  Gestural and full of buzzing energy, vivid colour and spontaneity, this show really is a visual feast… aghh I wish I could see these beauties in person. Count yourselves lucky, Queenslanders!

Next year, there’s even more in store for fans of Miranda’s work.  She’s been working closely with the team at Gorman on an exclusive collaboration for Autumn/Winter nets year, due in stores from April 2015!  ‘It’s pretty wild, and I’m thrilled with the results, the Gorman team have been a joy to work with, and I’ve always wanted to see my pictures translated into textiles’ says Miranda.  She will also venture into three dimensional work next year, with a unique jewellery and sculpture show at Pieces of Eight gallery later in 2015. ‘I’ve been spending my life savings and losing more hours than I care to mention on eBay, acquiring antique amulets and pendants from India, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Morocco and Turkey’ Miranda says!  She will be combining these treasures with semi precious stones, pearls and her own hand painted beads, creating exquisite one-off jewellery pieces for her show at Pieces of Eight.  You know we’ll keep you posted!
